{"id":531,"date":"2020-06-04T17:17:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T17:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dwq.hgp.mybluehost.me\/?p=531"},"modified":"2026-07-07T20:03:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T20:03:17","slug":"pest-control-technology-magazine-june-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pest50.com\/staging\/9204\/pest-control-technology-magazine-june-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Pest Control Technology Magazine, June 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dwq.hgp.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pct-cover-edit-pic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pest50.com\/staging\/9204\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pct-cover-edit-pic-1.jpg 525w, https:\/\/pest50.com\/staging\/9204\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pct-cover-edit-pic-1-300x86.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PCO Metzger Shifts Focus to Mask-Making&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brian Metzger, owner of GP Home Defense, Salina, Kan., is taking a break from pest control to make and distribute masks in his community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June 2020&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pctonline.com\/author\/1016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brad Harbison<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SALINA, Kan. \u2014 Brian Metzger, owner of GP Home Defense, Salina, Kan., has shifted his focus from controlling pests to helping keep others safe by making face masks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metzger, who founded GP Home Defense in 2018, said March was off to a great start for him, but as COVID-19 turned into a pandemic and began impacting his community, he decided it was time \u201cto put on the brakes.\u201d So, he turned to mask-making and soon established the Gopherwood Community Foundation, a non-profit organization that makes and distributes (free of cost) personal protective equipment (PPE).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have underlying health issues that make me one of those high-risk people,\u201d Metzger said. \u201cI figured I could sit out a couple months and survive, and if someone really needed me, I\u2019d suit up and be there.&nbsp; I was reading about the many facilities that couldn\u2019t get PPE, and I started researching mask guidelines, kind of the way I did with bed bugs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the foundation, Metzger has been able to recruit volunteer seamstresses throughout Central Kansas. Metzger decided to sacrifice some of his company\u2019s mattress encasements (used as part of its bed bug program), which he believes are excellent for stopping particulates and droplets. \u201cThey have a tight enough weave to make them water resistant without lamination or other treatment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mask\u2019s outside layer is a decorative cotton, an inner layer is material from the top of the encasement; the masks also include a pocket for replaceable filter material, and the inside layer next to the face is stretch knit material from the sides and bottom of the encasements. \u201cOne of my volunteers discovered that if she neatly cut along the seams when taking the encasements apart, those stitched seams made good material for mask ties,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the masks Metzger\u2019s team has made, he has received donated masks from Andrea Hancock and P.E.S.T. Relief International. Thus far, Metzger said he has distributed about 2,500 masks with a goal to make and distribute 15,000 masks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metzger said that doing bed bug work in nursing homes and assisted living facilities has left \u201ca special place in his heart for\u201d these residents. \u201cWhen COVID gets into these facilities it\u2019s devastating,\u201d he said. \u201cI realized that I was in a position, with enough help, to do something about it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metzger initially began funding the mask-making by himself. As the scope of the project grew, so too did the need for funding, so he set up the non-profit Gopherwood Community Foundation to collect donations.
